Pomegranate margaritas are the perfect example of a sweet and tart margarita. This is by far one of my favorite homemade cocktails ever. We use classic margarita ingredients and add pure pomegranate juice. If you love margaritas and pomegranates, you’re going to love this easy pomegranate margarita recipe!
How do I remove pomegranate seeds from a pomegranate and do I need to for this drink?
Realistically speaking, you do not even need to buy a real pomegranate for this drink unless you want pomegranate seeds as a garnish in your drink. I use bottled pure 100% pomegranate juice to make it easy. I personally love garnishing with the seeds and enjoy eating them as well!
Removing pomegranate seeds from a pomegranate is easier than you think. You just need to have some dedication and patience! I have tried so many different ways including the wooden spoon method, underwater method, and scoring the sides. The easiest way for me is simply scoring the ridges all around the pomegranate and cutting a square into the top. Then I place it in a big bowl and tear it apart with my hands. This is the easiest way for me because I’ve done it so much now and know what to expect.
However, if you want to prevent a juice mess, which can happen from just prying the fruit open, place the fruit underwater before you rip it open! The water helps prevent the juice from the seeds splattering everywhere and makes it easier for the seeds to separate from the flesh. The seeds will also sink to the bottom while the fleshy parts float to the top making separation much easier. Lastly, the absolute EASIEST and quickest solution is just to buy fresh pomegranate seeds already prepared for you at the grocery store. Use whichever method works best for you, but the least messy is with the water. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the mess!)
What garnishes should I use?
I personally enjoy a salted rim, pomegranate seeds, a lime wedge or wheel, and a small mint leaf. I love the aroma that you get from the mint leaf while you drink the margarita. You could also muddle a few mint leaves in the cocktail shaker before adding the liquids in and shaking for a pomegranate mint margarita!

Ingredients
The ingredients for a pomegranate margarita include classic margarita ingredients, plus pomegranate juice, and optional garnishes. Pictured is my 1800 pomegranate margarita.
- Blanco tequila
- Cointreau, triple sec, or orange liqueur
- agave or simple syrup (I prefer agave personally.)
- 100% pure pomegranate juice (use cranberry pomegranate juice for a cranberry pomegranate margarita)
- pure lime juice (use freshly squeezed or bottled if that is what you have on hand)
- Optional Garnishes: kosher salt or pink salt, lime, pomegranate seeds, mint leaves
This recipe is intended for adults of legal drinking age only.
Instructions
Prep glasses with salted rims by rubbing a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and then dunking the glasses into salt. Fill glasses with ice and several pomegranate seeds, then place in the freezer while you mix the cocktails for an extra chilled margarita.
Pour all ingredients into a large cocktail shaker, topped with ice.
Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
Strain over prepared glasses with ice and pomegranate seeds.
There you have it! A deliciously easy, sweet, and tart pomegranate margarita! This recipe makes two pomegranate margaritas.
Equipment
The only thing you really need to make these pomegranate margaritas is a cocktail jigger or an ounce measuring cup, a large cocktail shaker or something similar such as a large mason jar. After shaking the margarita mixture, you’ll need to strain it over ice so if your shaker does not have a strainer or you opt for a mason jar, you can certainly pour it over a small coned strainer above the glass.
Top tip
Chill prepped glasses in the freezer while you mix the cocktails to ensure a super cold drink!
