Homemade frozen dog treats are such a fun unique treat for your dog family members. It is a true act of love to make your own doggo treats! These homemade frozen yogurt dog treats are made with healthy ingredients that have great nutritional value for dogs such as nonfat plain yogurt and pumpkin. Additionally, I add in turmeric and spirulina for extra health benefits but this is completely optional. You could just use pumpkin and yogurt.

Freezer dog treats are so easy to make and come together super quickly. The hardest part about this dog frozen treats recipe is waiting for them to freeze before serving to your dog(s)! I'm sure they wouldn't mind tasting the spoon in the meantime though!

    homemade frozen yogurt dog treats

Since I brought home my first very own furry family member at just 18 years old, I have been making homemade dog treats. Fun Fact: Making dog treats is actually what propelled me forward into the baking world! I've always enjoyed baking but I did not know there was such an online presence for food media until I started to share my homemade dog treat recipes on social media.

My husband and I are always looking for the best food and supplements in the pet world. One of my absolute favorite resources has been The Forever Dog book. I love incorporating more holistic approaches and this book is so informative. I reference it weekly for my dogs, I swear! Our furry family members are our pride and joy. You could say I am the proudest fur mom there is!

Ingredients for Frozen Yogurt Dog Treats

All you need for these frozen treats is four total ingredients but two of the ingredients are optional or you can switch them out for something else if you prefer (or if your dog prefers).

    yogurt mixes for dog treats
    • Plain Nonfat Yogurt: Only use dog safe plain nonfat yogurt. (Be sure to avoid any flavored yogurts and especially those with a toxic ingredient to dogs called Xylitol which is used as a sweetener replacement. It is ESSENTIAL that you never ever feed anything with this toxic ingredient to your dogs.)
    • Pure Pumpkin Puree: Be sure to use plain pure pumpkin whether it be from a can or pumpkin puree you processed yourself but do not use pumpkin pie mix.
    • Organic Ground Turmeric: I love to add in turmeric where I can into my dog's diets because it is an incredible natural anti-inflammatory and is one of the most studied spices in the world for its health benefits!
    • Organic Spirulina: I use Wholistic Pet Organics Spirulina for my dog treats. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

You may also substitute the turmeric and spirulina for other ingredients or omit them all together. It is completely up to you.

How to Make Frozen Dog Treats

Combine pumpkin and two cups of nonfat plain dog safe yogurt in one bowl. In another bowl, mix the rest of the yogurt and spirulina together. Place each mixture into two different piping bags. Lay out all of your silicone molds. Then pipe a tiny amount of the green spirulina yogurt mixture into each mold cavity. Then fill the molds up with the orange pumpkin yogurt mixture.

Once all the molds are filled, place them in the freezer for at least four hours. Once frozen completely, remove the treats from the molds and store them in an airtight container in the freezer.

Variations of Frozen Yogurt Dog Treats

This dog treat recipe can be made with just pumpkin and yogurt for a simple 2 ingredient dog treat recipe. If you want to add some additional nutritional supplements like I do in this recipe by adding spirulina and turmeric, feel free to do so. You could also test out beet root powder or different dog friendly supplements if you would like.

    • Mashed Sweet Potato - sub out the pumpkin puree for equal parts mashed sweet potato. Keep in mind it might be a different consistency.

Equipment Needed for Homemade Frozen Dog Treats

I use these silicone molds to form all of my frozen dog treats. The best part about silicone molds is that you can bake with them also. They also make it so easy to portion out each treat to the perfect size. Keep in mind the portioning could vary depending on the dog's size.

You can get super tiny silicone molds if you have smaller dogs. We have always had larger breed dogs that weigh 70+lbs and 100+lbs. I find the 1-1.5 inch treat sizes are nice sizes for them, but if you have a small dog like my mom's Pomeranians, then you would want to scale down this recipe and portion smaller treats. Otherwise you'll end up with like 200+ tiny treats on your hands! Unless that's what you want, they stay good frozen for a long time!

How to Store Frozen Dog Treats

Frozen dog treats must be stored properly in the freezer. Because they are frozen they will last in an airtight container for quite a long time, but it is important that the container is air tight! Our freezer treats stay good in the freezer for around 3 months.

If you are making smaller treats for small dogs, they would last in the freezer an incredibly long time just because this recipe makes so many. I would recommend making a smaller batch. This recipe can easily be scaled down.

    Prep Time 20 minutes mins
    Freezing Time 4 hours hrs
    Course Dog Treats
Servings 100 1.5 inch frozen treats

    Ingredients

    • 2½ cups plain nonfat yogurt (*be sure to use yogurt that is safe for dogs.)
    • 1 cup pure pumpkin puree (*NOT pumpkin pie mix)
    • 1 tablespoon organic ground turmeric (optional)
    • 2 teaspoons organic spirulina powder (optional. I use Wholistic Pet Organics brand for dogs.)

    Instructions

    • Prepare all of your silicone molds out on baking sheets so that they are easy to transfer to the freezer.
    • Set out two separate bowls. In one bowl mix 2 cups yogurt, pumpkin, and turmeric together in until completely combined. In the other bowl mix remaining ½ cup of yogurt and spirulina until uniform.
    • Place pumpkin turmeric yogurt mixture in a super large piping bag and put spirulina yogurt mixture in another smaller piping bag. You can also use plastic zip top bags if you do not have piping bags.
    • Add a tiny amount of green spirulina yogurt mixture into each silicone mold. Then top off and fill each mold with the orange pumpkin yogurt mixture until all molds are filled.
    • Carefully grab each silicone mold from both ends and tap down on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles and level out the treats. Now place in the freezer for a minimum of 4 hours before removing treats from the molds.
    • Once treats are completely frozen, remove treats out of the molds and store in airtight containers in the freezer until ready to be given as a treat.
